She joined SWE as a freshman, helped organize the collegiate section at Princeton University, and served as president. During her first four years as a professional she was instrumental in organizing two professional sections, first in Baton Rouge and then in New Orleans, and served as representative and president of each. While a member of the Houston Area section in the mid-1980s, she led the Gulf Coast Region (Region C) as provisional region director during the Society’s transition to a regional structure. Claire has been a life member since 1983 and a Region C member at large (MAL) since relocating to central Louisiana in 1986.
Claire’s wealth of experience at the Society level includes three years as treasurer on the board of directors and three years on the board of trustees. During the past 40 years she previously served on or chaired many Society committees and task forces, including awards &recognition, checks & balances, collegiate activities, contingency fund review, dues structure, fiftieth anniversary, fund development, nominating, organizational effectiveness, outreach, restructure project, and strategic planning.
She has served as the MAL membership coordinator and the Society’s professional new section coordinator and for a number of years. In those capacities, she has provided guidance to others who have successfully organized more than 30 other professional sections throughout the United States. Claire also currently serves as MAL treasurer and second alternate Region C MAL representative, and as a member of the Society’s bylaws, finance, and membership committees.
Claire was recognized by the Society as a Distinguished New Engineer in 1984 and as a Fellow in 1995. She was honored to receive a Distinguished Service Award in 2000, the first year it was awarded by SWE. She is an avid reader and baker, contributing numerous goodies every month to her church’s bake sale.
